They're Back!

Marcy Pond - “Quacks” Earl Plato

They’re in full force on this March 31st, 2009. Paul and I reached Marcy Pond. No wood frogs yesterday but today is different. The temperature up and the slight increase makes the difference. Paul had called me earlier in the day and said, “Earl, the frogs are back.” Out we went with tape recorder and the Marcy pond was alive and the vernal pool just to the north was even more lively with the raspy quacking sounds of anxious males. The wood frog is an explosive breeder. These little guys have a dark mask. Note: they mate and in a few days they disperse into the surrounding hills.
Truly a sign of spring.
