When I walk along the Big Grapevine Trail the shelves always appear to extend from he trunks of the trees with their lower surfaces parallel to the ground. But are they really parallel? To find the answer to that recurring question I have brought along the carpenter’s level. Among the vertical trees I begin placing it against the lower side of all the fungi I can reach. I watch the bubble come to rest. Time and time again it halts its swing within the centered lines…. Polyporus is not infallible but the general rule holds true.”
