The King is Back

Trail Wood #40 by Earl Plato
Writer’s note: One of my favourite walks was down the back sandy road at Long Meadow Farm. My black Lab and I sauntered down to the wetland woods. Ahead on the left was the pond. For the five years we lived there I saw a resident kingfisher. He had his perch on an overlooking maple tree branch. There were minnows and leopard frogs in the pond. He seemed oblivious to us as we walked by headed to Lake Erie. It was a Belted Kingfisher. Its loud penetrating rattle we only heard when it flew into the nearby woods. Usually when we returned it was back on its favourite perch. Ed Teale at Trail Wood experienced the arrival of a kingfisher on that March 25th date.
“ As though waiting in the wings, a kingfisher sweeps in a rattling circuit of the pond…”
